Individuals and businesses across northern New England are adapting, coping and even thriving – and three New England public television stations are collaborating to tell those stories in the 10-part MAKING $ENSE NEW ENGLAND series, which premieres Thursday, November 19, 2009 at 8 p.m. on New Hampshire Public Television, Maine Public Broadcasting Network and Vermont Public Television. Many people in NH and our region are struggling to keep their homes. The residents of Aberdeen Park – a manufactured home neighborhood in Stratham, NH – faced a dilemma that could have forced them off the land they lived on. “It opened our eyes to be not so complacent, [and] take things for granted…It’s a case where people thought long-term – this is the best thing to do, to give us back our sense of security,” said Fran Masi of the residents’ decision to form a co-op and buy the property their homes are built on. Their story is about the power of taking action during difficult times.Amy Dacyzyn of Maine became famous for her frugality years ago, and now has a new following. The “Tightwad Gazette” author (sometimes known as the "frugal zealot") talks about how frugality works, in good times and bad. She shares practical and philosophical advice on how to save money, reduce living expenses and stay happy practicing frugality.Though the economic downturn may have cost you your job, the answer to finding a new one may be beyond the classifieds and mailing out resumes. It’s called a "job club" and it works. Each week, a dozen or more already or soon-to-be “former” professionals in Burlington, VT, gather to find their way back to work. The SMARTvt job club re-invents its members by applying their existing skills and those to which they aspire to a virtual corporation in which everyone has a leadership position and connection to the accomplishments of fellow members. And, in the final segment of the program, SEC Commissioner Elisse Walter is interviewed by Jennifer Rooks of MPBN. They discuss some of the new ways criminals are targeting investors by exploiting “hot trends” such as mortgages and alternative energy investments. Commissioner Walter also provides advice on how to protect yourself from becoming a victim. The MAKING $ENSE NEW ENGLAND 10-part series will air monthly through August 2010, with stories about grassroots responses and solutions to the economic crisis of northern New England. The series is a collaboration of New Hampshire Public Television, Maine Public Broadcasting Network, and Vermont Public Television. www.makingsensene.org Funding for Making $ense New England provided by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting; Financial Industry Regulatory Authority; Foundation for Financial Planning; FINRA Investor Education Foundation; and Goodwill Industries of Northern New England.
